HPU’s Laan And Verga Impressive At Honolulu Marathon

Honolulu (12/13/09) – Brandon Laan and Sara Verga, assistant coaches for the HPU cross country team, ran impressive races at today’s 37th Annual Honolulu Marathon. Laan finished sixth overall at 2 hours, 25 minutes, 41 seconds, tops of any registered US runner, and Verga crossed the tape at 3:13:59 for 16th place in the women’s division.

The race featured over 23,000 entries, and got under way in downtown Honolulu at 5:00 a.m. after a four-minute fireworks display.

Laan was also a top runner for the Sea Warriors, having graduated after the 2008 season. His time was the best of any Hawai‘i runner in over 10 years. He ran two seasons for HPU and was named to the 2006 NCAA All-West Region Team.

Verga was the second Hawai‘i women’s runner to cross the tape.

 

HPU Cross Country Finishes Season At NCAA Regional

San Francisco (11/7/09) – At the NCAA West Region Championships, the HPU men’s and women’s cross country teams finished 12thand 15th, respectively.

Dany Malley was the top finisher for HPU in the 10K race, crossing the tape at 32:56 for 34th. Michelle Lundh led the Lady Sea Warriors on the 6K course, placing 45th with a time of 23:07.

Quinn Horochuk, who placed first at the PacWest Championships, was the second finisher for HPU (51st, 23:18). She was followed by Kim Kuhnert (56th, 23:22), Mariane Uehara (118th, 24:44), Jamie Torres (126th, 25:05), and Wendy Darling (140th, 26:38).

Alaska-Anchorage took top team honors.

Finishing behind Malley on the men’s side were Kevin Enriques (57th, 34:00), Flemming Eriksen (63rd, 34:08), Jon Cleghorn (84th, 35:01), Vaughn Harber (91st, 35:28), Craig Kandler (113th, 36:45), and Kevin Wright (119th, 37:25).

Alaska-Anchorage again took top team honors.

 

HPU’s Quinn Horochuk Takes Top Honors At The PacWest Championships

San Francisco (10/31/09) – At the PacWest Cross Country Championships, the Lady Sea Warriors took home second place, and the HPU men’s team finished third. HPU senior Quinn Horochuk ran a career best in taking top individual honors for the women’s 8K race.

Horockuk (18:53) finished eight seconds better than second place Lacey Krout (19:01) of BYU-Hawai‘i. Also placing for the Lady Sea Warriors was Michelle Lundh (5th, 19:28), Mariane Uehara (11th, 19:46), Kim Kuhnert (12th, 19:56), Amanda Tancheleun (13th, 20:17), Jamie Torres (15th, 20:52), and Wendy Darling (18th, 21:24).

BYU-Hawai‘i took top team honors.

In the men’s action, HPU was paced by Dany Malley who placed eighth at 26:32. Academy of Art took top team honors and was led by individual winner Amos Maru (25:17).

Also placing for HPU in the 8K race was Kevin Enriques (13th, 26:54), Flemming Eriksen (16th, 27:01), Jon Cleghorn (19th, 27:05), Kevin Wright (20th, 27:09), Vaughn Harber (24th, 27:59), and Craig Kandler (27th, 28:33).

Both teams now set their sites on the NCAA West Region Championships next Saturday, November 7, also in San Francisco. The women’s race will be a 6K course with the men running a 10K race.

  

Sea Warriors Compete At BYUH Invitational

Laie, HI (10/17/09) – At the BYU-Hawai‘i Invitational, the HPU men’s and women’s cross country teams placed third and second, respectively.

In the ladies action, Mariane Uehara and Michelle Lundy were the top HPU finishers in the 5K race. They took the sixth and seventh spots with a time of 19:31. The Sea Warriors finished second behind BYUH.

Also placing for HPU were Kim Kuhnert (10th in 19:41), Amanda Tanchaleun (11th in 20:17), Jamie Torres (14th in 20:45), and Wendy Darling (15th in 21:20).

On the men’s side, Kevin Enriques was the top HPU finisher for the first time in his career. He ran the 8K course in a time of 26:13 for sixth place overall. The Sea Warriors finished third behind UH-Hilo and winner BYUH.

HPU’s Craig Kandler also had a personal best placing in his first season with the Sea Warriors. He finished 18th with a time of 28:09.

Also finishing for HPU was Jon Cleghorn (ninth in 26:21), Flemming Eriksen (10th in 26:42), Vaughn Harber (12th in 27:15), and Kevin Wright (15th in 27:37).

The race was the regular season finale for both teams. Next up is the Pacific West Conference Championships to be held Saturday, October 31, in San Francisco.

 

HPU Cross Country Teams Place Second

Hilo, HI (10/10/09) – At the UH-Hilo Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Invitational, the HPU men’s and women’s teams both took second place honors. Quinn Horochuk and Dany Malley were HPU’s top finishers for its respective 6K races.

Horochuk took top overall honors (25:34), her first top finish of the season. The top 10 finishers included three other Sea Warrior runners. Kim Kuhnert finished third at 25:53, Michelle Lundh placed seventh at 26:11, and Mariane Uehara cross the finish line at 26:30 for a ninth place finish.

In the men’s race, Malley finished second overall at 21:10, 25 seconds behind individual winner Spencer Davlia (BYU-Hawai‘i). The Sea Warriors had one other top 10 finisher, Kevin Enriques at 21:44. Flemming Eriksen (21:59) and Vaughn Harber (22:08) finished 11th and 12th respectively.

The 17th and 18th spots went to Jon Cleghorn (22:34) and Kevin Wright (22:43), and Craig Kandler came in at 24:07 for a 26th place finish.

BYU-Hawai‘i took top team honors for both races. The Sea Warriors conclude the regular season next Saturday, October 17, at the BYU-Hawai‘i Invitational in Laie, HI.

Start time is set for 8:00 a.m.

 

HPU Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Place at HPU Invitational

Kaaawa, HI (9/5/09) – At the HPU Cross Country Invitational, the Sea Warrior men’s team finished second with the women’s team placing fifth. The race was the season opener for HPU, and was held at Kaaawa Valley.

In the men’s race, sophomore Jon Cleghorn paced the Sea Warriors on the 8K course, finishing sixth overall at 25:54. Freshman newcomer Flemming Eriksen finished ninth overall with a course time of 26:08. Dany Malley, Vaughn Harber, and Kevin Enriques rounded out the HPU finishers.

BYUH’s Brendan McMaster placed first overall at 24:52, and Humboldt State took top team honors.

In the ladies action, the Sea Warriors placed fifth overall in the 5K course. Newcomer Mariane Uehara finished 10th overall at 19:11 to lead HPU. Quinn Horochuk crossed the finish line two seconds later, and was followed by Wendy Darling, Amanda Tancheleun, and Jamie Torres.

Theresia Schnurr (Alaska-Fairbanks) took top individual honors at 17:58, and BYU-Hawaii won the team title.

Both Sea Warrior teams return to action Saturday, September 19, at the UH Big Wave Invitational. Race time is set for 8:00 a.m. on the Kaneohe Marine Corps Base.
